Jerry Velona

The Joint Venture Band

Classic American Music - Rock, Soul, Blues, Funk, Country and Jazz

The Joint Venture Band is the live music project of Jerry Velona - singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.  The band takes many different forms and incorporates some of the finest performing musicians in the Boston area.  Our "thing" is rock, soul, funk, country and jazz. We play many of my original tunes in addition to a bunch of interesting, tasty covers - not the usual stuff.  We like to think we're kind of the thinking person's band; but you can definitely think with your hips too!  :-)

The current incarnation is comprised of these blokes:

Joe Musella - guitar/vocals    -

Joe Musella is a performer, recording artist, and music educator active in the Boston music scene. He has performed and recorded with members of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, The Replacements, The Joe Perry Project, and The J. Geils Band.

In 2013 he released Echo a ten song album of original instrumental rock.  Joe is a very versatile and skilled player who slides easily from classic rock to alternative rock and jazz and fusion.

He has been a professor at Berklee College of Music for over fifteen years. For the past few years Joe has taught students all over the world through "Classic Rock Guitar Workshop", a class he authored for Berklee's online school, Berkleemusic.com.

Tom Appleman - bass/vocals  -

For more than 15 years since he was a teenage bass playing phenom with hip hop/funk rock act Epileptic Disco, Tom has been a tireless journeyman musician playing on stage with the Drifters, Robbie Krieger of the Doors, and the Aerosmith tribute band Draw the Line. He's toured Japan, celebrated Super Bowl victories with Kid Rock and had the distinction of being fired by teeny-bopper star Jo-Jo!

For the past several years, Tom has branched out into writing and singing original material.  in addition to keeping his wide-ranging career as a sideman going strong, Tom teaches at Berklee College of Music following in the footsteps of his father Rich Appleman who taught there for many years.  Tom has recently produced and performed in two big shows at the Berklee Performance Center performing the Beatles White Album and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John in their entirely.

Tom has his own projects and occasionally will have to sub out of a gig. In the past year or so we've been really lucky to have Tim Archibald take Tom's place.  Tim's hardly the "B" guy; he's a certified Boston rock legend having played with Peter Wolf, RTZ, Terrence Trent D'Arby and many other top bands.

Early in 2017, Jerry, Joe and Tim went into Woolly Mammoth Studio in Waltham and recorded a bunch of live versions of some of the songs in the band's set list.  David Minehan engineered the project and here are some of the cuts from this session which will give you a pretty good idea of how the band sounds live.
